Data Security – building a culture of safety

It has taken a major global cyber security crisis to finally take the unexciting topic of taking care of data to the top of the corporate agenda.   But before the news cycle moves on, it is time to ask why data security is not at the core of every business and civic body’s operating model?

How long is it since hard hats, safety boots and hi-visibility outfits became the norm in hazardous working environments? The safety of our workers was not improved by a spontaneous realisation by all that heavy moving parts and work at great heights could be dangerous. Businesses did not just decide to do the right thing and protect their  employees. It took rules, enforcement and consequences to build a culture of safety that is now accepted and generally enforced.

Burdensome as it may seem, we are obliged to follow rules, standards and safety processes across a wide range of disciplines to keep our physical environments safe. What is so different about protecting the integrity, security and privacy of the data that is increasingly held about each and every one of us?

The vulnerability of patient data has shone a light on the impact that failures of security can have on the health and safety of ordinary people – not to mention the operational and reputational damage to the controllers of the data.

The KingramRed report on Digital Transformation 2017 showed that Irish organisations are slow to embrace the advanced digital technologies businesses  require to compete and stay relevant and connected to increasing ‘digital’ consumers.  However in adopting new technologies it’s necessary to embrace both the opportunities and the risks and to make the necessary investments to secure all data.   New European regulations (GDPR) are set to improve the control individuals have over their own data. With clear rules and heavy sanctions for non-compliance, the hope is that organisations will step up and embed data protection into their operations.

Worryingly our  research shows that 60% of businesses do not have a vision for a digital future and 50% also agree that there is not sufficient urgency in tackling the transition to a digital economy. It is clear that it was going to take a major crisis to bring this to the attention of business leaders at large.  It’s time  for leadership teams to realise that their customers are the life blood of their organisations and their data, is a critical asset that they must protect.
